While watching a basketball game at Cheer Cliff enlightens us
with the origins of Basketball. |
|
Here's a little known fact.
Now most of you were probably under the assumption that
basketball was invented in these United States, right?
(One of the barflies: "Yeah, James Naismith, Springfield
University")
I can see it's a good thing I showed up tonight. Basketball was
invented thousands of years ago by the Mayans, they played
it for centuries.
Cliff then tries to stump Coach but Coach guesses the Mayans,
claiming a Mayan must have told him.
The truth:
Dr. James Naismith did in fact invent Basketball at the YMCA
Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891.
James Naismith was born in Ramsay township, near Almonte,
Ontario, Canada.
The Mayans did have the Great Ballcourt where they did play a
game using a ball, but the details and rules are long
forgotten, except, maybe the fact that the captain of the
winning team earned the honor of being beheaded.
Some Mayan
Inventions:
-
The Mayans are credited with inventing the calendar.
-
They also are thought to have invented hieroglyphic writing
in the Western hemisphere.
