Pictures and info on a signed copy of Nineteen Eighty-Four.
Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984) is one
of the biggest classics of our time. The book was published in 1949 and just
after it was published, author George Orwell, died in the hospital. Shortly
before his death, he had only signed a very few copies. Because of this, it’s
rarity only grows and grows.
The most expensive copy bears the inscription “For
Elly with regards, Geo Orwell.” This signed book has the going price of $26,000.
Not too bad when you consider that the owner of the book has a remarkable piece
of fiction along with an amazing collector’s piece. There are many copies that
have been signed by celebrated authors such as J.R. Tolkien and although these
are indeed collector’s items, they are not nearly as sought after as those
signed by the original author.
1984 is a book that depicts a modern society and
warns against emerging trends. The book was one of, if not the, author’s largest
success. 1984 can be attributed to starting the phrase “Orwellian”, which
indicates a totalitarian society such as that shown in the novel. Another
phrase, “Big Brother is watching you,” also stems from the famous novel.
