REMINGTON 2 TYPEWRITER
THE LONGEST LIST OF THE LONGEST
STUFF AT THE LONGEST DOMAIN NAME AT LONG LAST
Pictures and info on the Remington 2 typewriter.
People love to have relicts of the
past. There is a certain enjoyment that comes from knowing how things were once
done and what types of machines were used to do them. Collector’s love items
such as these and a good example of this kind of item are antique typewriters.
That is why the Remington 2 Typewriter is such a prize.
The Remington 2 was first produced in 1885 and the
type in the picture above has been dated from 1893 and 1894, making it over one
hundred years old. This type of typewriter is known as an understrike, or blind
typewriter. To see what one has typed, the hinged carriage must be lifted and
the underside of the platen, where the typing is, can then be seen.
The Remington typewriters were some of the most
successful typewriters of their time. However, around the 1900s, front-strike
typewriters broke onto the market and this significantly decreased the
popularity of the understrikes. These first typewriters had all but disappeared
by the beginning of the first World War.
