Pictures and info on the John Senex world map.
This map of the world is extremely
large and very rare. This map is an antique Twin Hemisphere World Map and has
been engraved for John Senex to publish in his Elephant Folio Atlas of 1711.
This map shows the scientific curiosity that was
evident in the eighteenth century. The map’s borders are filled with long
passages of text from two of the most forward thinking scientists of that day,
Isaac Newton and Edmund Halley. The map has been confined to many unknowns such
as the debate as to whether or not California is an island. On the map, the
state is shown as a peninsula. The map indicates that there is still a search
for a northern passage to Asia and it shows that the northern Pacific still
needs much knowledge about it to be portrayed truthfully. Senex makes no attempt
to pass these off as truths but admits on the map that there are still places
yet undiscovered.
The map is printed on heavy and stable paper and is
colored in yellow, green, blue and red. The map size is forty-three inches by
twenty-five inches and is available for $9,500.00.
