What is the most expensive painting in the world?

The $100 million mark was broken for a painting May 05 2004 when Pablo Picasso's Garçon à la Pipe sold for a cool $104,168,000.00 USD. making it the world's most expensive painting.

Garcon a la Pipe was painted by Pablo Picasso in 1905 at the age of 24.

Garcon a la Pipe replaced Portrait of Doctor Gachet by Vincent Van Gogh which sold for a pittance of only $82.5 million.

On October 18, 2006 Steve Wynn,  a Las Vegas mogul, agreed to sell his Picasso 'Le Reve' that he bought in 1997 for $48.4 million for a record setting $139 million.

Now this would have been a new record except that Steve Wynn backed into the painting and put a 3" tear into it with his pointy elbow and as a result the record breaking sale did not go through and Steve Wynn still owns the Picasso.

Currently the most expensive painting ever sold is No. 5, 1948 by Jackson Pollock which fetched $140 million on Nov 2, 2006.
