What is the most expensive newspaper in the world?
While you can get a newspaper
subscription delivered to your door for dollars a week, or pick one up for a
dollar at a stand, newspapers are relatively cheap. And with so much information
being available on the Internet, many people are skimming the sports section or
checking the stocks while they are also reading emails and starting their
business of the day. However, consider that while the local daily newspapers may
be decreasing in value due to the fact that they will soon be obsolete, there is
one newspaper that continues to increase in value. The value of this newspaper
is interesting because in this case, it’s not what’s in the paper that counts
but what’s on it!
On this newspaper, which is a copy of the Zimbrulu
and Vulturulu, a Romanian paper that was originally published in 1858, there are
eight Cap de Bour stamps. At the time, the newspaper was being sent to Galati
and it required eight stamps because it was so heavy. When it comes to rare
stamps, these are about as rare as you can get and the fact that there are eight
of them together means that this is one very expensive piece of paper!
The owner of an auction house, David Feldman,
received the copy of the valuable newspaper and at the auction it was sold to a
very wealthy art collector. Joseph Hackmey paid just over 800,000 pounds for the
precious piece, which is about 1.3 million dollars in US currency.
