What was the most expensive presidential inauguration in the world?

The 2009 Presidential Inauguration that took place on January 20, 2009 in order to officially swear in Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States marked many landmarks in American and global history. Not only was it the first inauguration of the first African-American of the United States, it was also the inauguration to be attended by the most people. As well, it followed the most expensive election in history so it’s not very surprising at all that the inauguration was also the most expensive Presidential Inauguration to take place in the United States.

Some of the cost came from things such as security and simply setting up the Capitol Buildings (as we all saw them draped in red, white, and blue) but the bulk of the cost came from the sheer amount of people that were in attendance. Approximately 2 million people showed up in Washington, D.C. to bear eyewitness to the huge celebration and for this, seating needed to be put in place, security measures needed to be tripled and quadrupled, and bare necessities such as port-a-potties needed to be brought in. Fortunately, this great number of people was expected and so, proper measures were taken. The Bush administration had declared the city of Washington to be in a state of emergency for that day, meaning that emergency funds could be taken and used to help deal with the numbers and the associated cost.

All in all, the 2009 Presidential Inauguration cost approximately $150 million. Of this $49 million was used from the emergency fund and Barack Obama contributed $43 million. So where did the other $58 million come from? That is not exactly known but what is certain is that the inauguration of Barack Obama was the most expensive Presidential Inauguration in U.S. history.
