What is the most expensive hockey stick in the world?
May 13, 2010
You probably think that the
world’s most expensive hockey stick is signed by a famous NHL player, or that is
was used in one of the most important Stanley Cup games in history. But, the
price of the most expensive hockey stick actually has nothing to do with who
used it, or who signed it. It all comes down to how old it is.
The oldest hockey stick in history is worth its
price simply because it comes from the 1850s, years upon years before the first
game of ice hockey was ever played. The reputable stick was made in Ontario,
Canada and remains the possession of Gordon Sharpe, who inherited the stick from
a long line of people who had passed the stick down. Sharpe had the stick
appraised for authenticity and value and it was estimated to be worth $4.25
The stick has been displayed at Wayne Gretzky’s bar
in Toronto, and it has also been stored at the Hockey Hall of Fame. However,
Sharpe has stated on numerous occasions that the stick is simply too expensive
to maintain, store, and perform general upkeep for the stick and that he would
like to sell it. He has tried three different times to do just that at private
auctions but, there has never been a buyer.
