Who won the first 2006 Olympic medal?

February 11 2006 saw the first day of competition in Turin, Italy as the XX Olympic Winter Games got under way.

The first event to wrap up was the Individual Nordic Combined, an event where in the morning you ski down a hill and jump as far as you can, then, in the afternoon you ski 15 KM of grueling cross country.

Georg Hettich of Germany finished the 15 KM in a time of 39:44.6, capturing the the first gold medal of the 2006 Olympiad.

Norwegian  Felix Gottwald won the first silver medal Halvard Hanevold, also of Norway, won the first bronze.
