WORLD'S FIRST RECORD
OF HALLEY'S COMET
THE LONGEST LIST OF THE LONGEST
STUFF AT THE LONGEST DOMAIN NAME AT LONG LAST
When was the world's first record of Halley's Comet?
Although far from being the
brightest comet, Halley's Comet is definitely the most famous.
In 1682 Edmond Halley concluded that the comet he saw
was the same as that observed in 1531 and 1607. He also concluded that the comet
returned every 76 years, which was close, it returns every 75 - 78 years or so.
Comet Halley or Haley's Comet was then named after
Edmond Halley and given the designation of 1P/Halley.
Based of the findings on Edmond Halley the first
recorded observation of Halley's Comet was traced back to Chinese historical
records from 240 BC and possibly as early as 2467 BC.
The last time Halley's Comet was at perihelion was
February 09 1986 and the next return to perihelion will be on July 28 2061.
