What is the world's first cash register?

In an effort to combat employee theft at their Ohio pub James Ritty and his brother invented the world's first cash register dubbed the 'the incorruptible cashier'.

On January 30 1883 they received a patent for their invention.

In 1884 John H. Patterson purchased the patent and the rights to produce the cash registers and formed the National Cash Register Company.
