What was the first ship to cross the Panama Canal?
The Panama Canal was completed in
August of 1914, cutting a 51 mile path through the Panama landscape from the
Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
The canal reduced the journey from Eastern North America
to the west by some 8,000 miles.
On August 13 1914 the SS Cristibal became the first
ship to cross the Panama Canal but due to WWI the official opening of the canal
did not occur until August 15 1914 and the SS Ancon has the honor of showing up
in the records as the first ship to cross the Panama Canal.
