The world's first lighthouse, The
Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria, was built on the island of Pharos, Egypt around
270 B.C. to warn ships of the dangerous sandbars off Alexandria.
It is one of the Seven ancient Wonders of the World.
The Pharos stood anywhere from 400 - 600 feet
high, although it is believed to be closer to 400 feet, and was powered by a
finally destroyed in the 14th century by a series of earthquakes.
