WORLD'S FIRST
AMERICAN PENITENTIARY
THE LONGEST LIST OF THE LONGEST
STUFF AT THE LONGEST DOMAIN NAME AT LONG LAST
What was the world's first American penitentiary?
The first American Penitentiary
was cell blocks constructed in an old jail by the name of the Walnut Street
Jail.
It was created with outside cells
with a central corridor. The construction was completed in 1790 in Philadelphia
transforming the Walnut Street Jail into the first American Penitentiary.
The use of the word penitentiary
comes from the Pennsylvania Quakers and their belief in self-examination and
penitence as a way to salvation.
