What was the world's first retired hurricane name?
In 1950 the U.S. Weather Bureau
began using the phonetic alphabet to name hurricanes starting with Able.
In 1953 the names were switched to that of women and in
1979 men's names were used for the first time.
Hurricanes that were notable had their names retired
with over 60 names retired so far.
The very first hurricane name to be retired was Carol,
hurricane Carol struck the Northeast U.S. late August 1954 as a category 3 hurricane with
winds reaching 100 miles per hour.
