Who was the first wife of Henry VIII?

Catherine of Aragon (December 16, 1485 – January 07, 1536) had the honor of becoming Henry's first wife, although he was not her first husband.

Catherine first married Prince Arthur, the eldest son of Henry VII, brother to Henry VIII, in 1501 but shortly after both became ill, sweating sickness is believed. Catherine survived but Arthur did not.

Catherine married Henry VIII on June 11, 1509, after he ascended the throne.

In their 24 years of marriage Catherine and Henry had six children, but only one survived, Mary who went on to become Queen Mary I of England.

Fearing of not having a male heir Henry wanted an annulment of the marriage and finally got his wish on on May 23, 1533 which cleared the way for Henry to marry his second wife; Anne Boleyn.
