What was the first state to use the gas chamber?
Nevada was the first state to
sanction the use of the gas chamber.
The first execution by lethal gas
in Nevada took place on February 8, 1924 and the first person executed in
this fashion was Chinese born Gee Jong after he was found guilty of murdering Tom Quong Kee, a member of a rival gang.
Gee Jong was taken from his cell and strapped into the chair within the gas chamber.
The execution began at 9:30 am and he was left in the gas chamber for 30 minutes
after he lapsed into unconsciousness to ensure his death since no external
stethoscope was available.
