What was the world's first zamboni?
With a cool last name like Zamboni
it was obvious Frank J. Zamboni was destined for greatness.
Frank J. Zamboni was born on January 16, 1901 in
Eureka, Utah but in 1922 he found himself in Southern California running an auto
repair business with his brothers Lawrence and George.
Not long after the brothers catered to dairy industry,
building and installing large refrigerator units so dairies could keep their
after the brothers built a plant that made the block ice for wholesalers to use
to pack their products for transport by rail across the country.
In 1939 the Zamboni brothers, being experts at creating
ice, opened Iceland Skating Rink in Paramount but soon ran into a problem, it
took several men an hour or more to resurface the ice, but luckily necessity is
the mother of invention.
In 1949 Frank J. Zamboni had a self-propelled, single operator resurfacer
working and was granted a patent based on the design of the 'Model A', the
world's first zamboni.
