What was the world's first golf club?

In 1744 The Gentlemen Golfers of Edinburgh began as the world's first golf club at Leith Links in Edinburgh, Scotland.

A trophy was purchased by the club and on April 02 1744 the first recorded open golf championship was played. There were 13 rules introduced and the championship was played over 5 holes none of which was shorter than 400 yards.

John Rattray was the winner and received a silver golf club and the title 'Captain of the Golf’.

In 1768 the world's first golf clubhouse was built by The Gentlemen Golfer at Leith Links.
