When were the world's first X Games?

In 1993 ESPN bigwigs decide to create an international event for action sport athletes and on on April 12, 2004 ESPN announces that the first Extreme Games will be held in June of 1995.

The first X Games were called the Extreme Games, the name was changed to X Games in 1996, and they were held in Providence and Newport, Rhode Island and Mount Snow, Vermont from June 24 to July 01, 1995.

The first X Games consisted of 27 events in the following 9 catagories:

  • Bungee Jumping

  • Eco-Challenge

  • In-line Skating

  • Skateboarding

  • Skysurfing

  • Sport Climbing

  • Street Luge

  • Biking

  • Water Sports

A few of the more famous athletes that attended the first X Games were Matt Hoffman, who won the Bicycle Stunt - Vert event, and Tony Hawk, who won the Skateboard - Vert Singles event.
