The first Slinky ever

WORLD'S FIRST SLINKY
THE LONGEST LIST OF THE LONGEST STUFF AT THE LONGEST DOMAIN NAME AT LONG LAST

What was the world's first Slinky?

What walks down stairs, alone or in pairs,
And makes a slinkity sound?
A spring, a spring, a marvelous thing,
Everyone knows it’s Slinky…
It's Slinky, it's Slinky, for fun it's a wonderful toy
It's Slinky, it's Slinky, it's fun for a girl and a boy

The year was 1943 and a clumsy Richard James, a US marine engineer knocked a torsion spring off a table and and watched it roll around on the floor.  Later that day he told his wife: "I think there could be a toy in this." The couple got a $500 loan and experimented, producing 400 of the new toys. Richards wife, Betty scanned through the dictionary and came up with the name "Slinky", defined as  a Swedish word meaning stealthy, sleek and sinuous.

In November 1945 Richard and Betty James set up a ramp at Gimbels department store in Philadelphia to demonstrate the Slinky's walking skills and to sell them for a springy $1.00.

The Slinky was an instant hit and in 1948 they built a factory in Philadelphia, later relocating their headquarters to Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.
