When was the gas chamber first used for an execution?
The first time the gas chamber was
used for an execution was in Nevada on February 8, 1924 when Gee Jon was
executed for the murder of Tom Quong Kee in Mina, Nevada on August 27, 1921.
The building was much too large to
be used for an execution by gas inhalation but the prosecutor’s were still happy
with the results. Because it was so large, the gas took a long time to fill the
building and the cost of the gas was extremely high.
The second execution to be held in
the building was done just as inefficiently and so, construction of a building
deemed specifically for gas execution was built in 1929.
