Who was the world's first woman to make two spaceflights?
Svetlana Savitskaya was a woman
who knew her space talk. Not only was she the first woman to make two flights
into space but she was also the first woman to perform an eva, which is a
spacewalk. The shuttle used for her spacewalk mission was the Salyut 7 and she
performed the spacewalk on July 25, 1984. Savitskaya was outside of her space
shuttle for just over three hours and thirty minutes. This was the same mission
that gave her the extra credit of being the second woman in space.
When she returned after that mission, she was
appointed commander of an all-female crew that would head back up in the same
space shuttle in honor of International Women’s Day. However, this mission never
took place. She was given the title of ‘Hero of the Soviet Union’ twice and
there is an asteroid named 4118 Sveta, which is named after her.
