Who was the world's first Miss America?

Adults and children both love watching The Miss America pageant every year, where contestants are brought in from every state and then judged to determine who will be crowned the winner after multiple competitions including talent, swimwear, and ball-gown rounds. The first girl to ever be crowned ‘Miss America’ is also the reason the title was created.

In 1921 Margaret Gorman was named Miss America after winning a series of other competitions, including ‘Miss Washington, D.C.’ The other pageant titles that she had won were: Inter-city Beauty, Amateur; and The Most Beautiful Bathing Girl in America. She was expected to carry all three of her positions the following year after winning them however, someone else had already filled the position of Miss Washington D.C. and saying both of the other two titles was a mouthful.

For this reason, the term ‘Miss America’ was coined to encompass all of her titles in one. While every Miss America after her has been crowned in the early months of the year, Margaret Gorman was the only one to ever be awarded the title at the end of the year.
