WORLD'S FIRST
TELEVISION TALK SHOW

THE LONGEST LIST OF THE LONGEST STUFF AT THE LONGEST DOMAIN NAME AT LONG LAST

What was the world's first television talk show?

With the emergence of radio came the popularity of talk shows. These shows allowed people to listen to other people talk about news and other events. When we consider today what a talk show is, we are generally referring to tabloid talk shows, that bring to us certain issues or topics that we find interesting, controversial, or informative. Among the big names that have brought talk shows right into our homes through our televisions are Oprah Winfrey, Jerry Springer, and Geraldo to name just a few. But none of these big names are known for having the first television talk show in history. That title belongs to the one and only, Phil Donahue.

The Phil Donahue Show started as a local television talk show in Dayton, Ohio and ran in that format for 3 years before being moved to syndication, where it would run for 26 years. Donahue brought to the forefront of America many controversial issues such as homosexuality, abuse, and other issues such as women’s issues and racial issues. After 26 years, Donahue saw its end as television talk shows became known as trash and tabloid journalism. The show was bumped from station to station and time slot to time slot until in May 1996 it was finally cancelled.
