Who scored the first goal in the NHL?

The only thing certain was that it was a Montreal player that scored the first ever goal in the NHL, which on is up for debate.

The NHL opened it's first season on December 19, 1917, featuring 2 games; the Montreal Wanderers hosted the Toronto Arenas and the Montreal Canadiens hosted the Ottawa Senators.

In both games a Montreal player scored the first goal, for the Wanderers it was Dave Ritchie and for the Canadiens it was Joe Malone.

As there was no accurate time keeping back then, just who scored the first goal is up for assumption, but it is widely accepted that the honor goes to Montreal Wanderer Dave Ritchie.

Dave Ritchie scored 1 minute into the first period, while the Canadien player, Joe Malone, scored 6 1/2 minutes into the first period so assuming both games started on time it would be safe to bet on Dave Ritchie.

Just in case you're wondering the Montreal Wanderers defeated the Toronto Arenas 10 - 9 and the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Ottawa Senators 7 - 4.
