Who was the first person to circumnavigate the globe?
Circumnavigation is considered to
be a trip around the entire globe and is traditionally thought to be done by
ship or boat. Today circumnavigation also generally includes travel by air, but
it still much include travelling around the entire globe at least once.
It was in 1511-1521 that Fredinand Magellan tried
to make it into the record books as the first person to circumnavigate the
globe. In a way, he accomplished his mission as he is often credited with the
first circumnavigation of the globe. However, Magellan was not the first person
to travel around the entire world.
Once Magellan and his crew reached Cebu, in the
Philippines, he met with the local people and brought them gifts. They accepted
him and welcomed him however, the king of the island was very displeased that
Magellan was on his island and he ordered his tribe to fight him. A battle
ensued and Magellan was killed. His crew however, continued on with the mission
and Magellan’s second-in-command, Juan Sebastian Elcano is actually the first
person to circumnavigate the globe.
