When was the world's first Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge?
The Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander
Challenge is a competition funded by NASA that offers a prizes for teams that
can build a lunar lander like, rocket powered, vihicle that must then fly up,
horizontally and land on a designated landing pad. There are 2 levels to the
competition and prizes can be as high as $1,000,000. for winning level 2. The
prizes are paid by the X PRIZE Foundation, with sponsorship from the Northrop
Grumman Corporation who run the on-going competition.
The first Lunar Lander Challenge was held in 2006 with
only one team showing up, Armadillo Aerospace, but they were unable to complete
either level and no prize money was awarded.
In 2007 Armadillo Aerospace, again, was the only team
entered and again won no money.
2008 saw 2 teams participate, Armadillo Aerospace and
TrueZer0, and on their second attempt Armadillo Aerospace completed level 1 and
won $350,000.00 USD.
