WORLD'S FIRST
COMMERCIAL WEB SITE
THE LONGEST LIST OF THE LONGEST
STUFF AT THE LONGEST DOMAIN NAME AT LONG LAST
What was the world's first commercial web site?
Those annoying ads, we're sure
you love them, but where did it all begin?
It was October 1994 and a bunch of HotWired geeks were
sitting around discussing the why not to put up advertising on the internet,
after all the internet was a community.
Eventually, quite quickly, the prospect of making money
won out and the first commercial web site was born.
Sponsored by AT&T, a 468 x 60 banner was placed on the
HotWired site paving the way to where we are today.
Now we must add a 'but'.....
In 1993 Dale Dougherty published Global Network Navigator,
which was bought out by AOL in 1995, and is considered by some to be the world's
first commercial web site.
