What was the world's first crossword puzzle?

Crossword puzzles were derived from the 19th century English word squares where a word was placed in row going across as well as down etc. to complete a square.

On December 21 1913 the New York World published Arthur Wynne's " Word-cross", the world's first known published crossword puzzle.
