The story of ghosts that haunt Canadaigua.
Canadaigua, New York has a rich
history with many tales of ghosts and paranormal activities. When this area was
first settled, there were many Native American Indians that called the area
home, which the European settlers had to contend with. One such Seneca Chief and
orator was Red Jacket. He was very outspoken when it came to his beliefs and
thoughts concerning selling their land to the Europeans. He could not
rationalize his beliefs to the Iroquois Indians and in 1797, a contract of sale
was agreed upon. It has been told that Red Jacket’s ghost still haunts the area
from time to time still angry over the selling of their land to the white man.
Red Jacket is not the only ghost known to haunt
Canadaigua. Jemima Wilkinson is still causing havoc to the locals of this area.
She was an evangelist that lived in the area during the 18th century. During one
of her meetings, she claimed to be a reincarnation of Christ. Many of the
residents refused to believe her claims and she was indicted on blasphemy
charges. To this day, she is still angered that her claims were denied and that
she was charged with blasphemy.
William Morgan disappeared in Canadaigua after he
told everyone he was going to publish a book on about the truth behind
Freemasonry and all of their secrets would be told. Since his disappearance,
many have seen his ghost around the area especially close to areas where
Freemason holds their meetings.
