The story of the Hard Rock Café and Captain Tony’s Saloon.
Key West Florida is a great
destination for those that love warm weather and beaches, but even on this small
island, there are ghosts to be found. Two popular locations are the Hard Rock
Café and the Captain Tony’s Saloon.
The Hard Rock Café is located in a large home on
Duval Street. William Curry, who was the first millionaire of Florida, built the
home for his son Robert as a wedding gift. All of Robert’s life he has been
sickly. Once William passed away, Robert was in charge of the family fortune. He
was not a businessman such as the likes of his father, partly due to his health.
The money was soon gone and Robert committed suicide in the bathroom on the
second floor. Today, the home is now home to the Hard Rock Café but Robert has
never left. Many guests and staff have reported seeing a dark haired man walking
around the home.
Captain Tony’s Saloon is the fist Florida bar;
however, before it was a bar it was Sloppy Joe’s and prior to that it was the
very first morgue on Key West. This was the best location for the morgue since
the hanging tree was just outside. Here many pirates and murderers took their
last breath. By record, 75 people were hung from the tree. Today, the tree grows
through the center of Captain Tony’s Saloon. When a new foundation was being
created to enlarge the building, 16 skeletons were found. In the poolroom, you
will see the tombstone where the coroner buried his daughter. The most popular
ghost of Captain Tony’s Saloon is that of a woman that was executed for killing
her husband. It is rumored that she is seen quite often.
