The story of
the Bonds Chapel Cemetery.
Anyone
growing up in southern Indiana has at one time or another, been taken
out to Bonds Chapel outside West Baden for a snipe hunt. If you do not
know what a snipe hunt is, it is when a group of people get together,
hand one person a bag, and have them sit in a dark, eerie, cemetery
waiting to catch a snipe while the others are suppose to be getting one
to head their way. The problem is, this is just a joke and the person
is really left holding the bag, as the rest of the group drive off and
leave the person behind in the cemetery. However, in Bonds cemetery the
snipe-hunting prank also involves the tale of the haunted tombstone.
There is
a tombstone in the cemetery that actually grows the impression of a
chain down its side. The chain grows one link each year on the
anniversary of the death of the man that calls the grave home. As the
story goes, the man beat someone to death with a chain, thus the reason
for a chain.
Family
members believed that the impression of a chain was some type of error
by the stonecutter and even had the tombstone replaced. This did not do
a bit of good; the chain began to grow again. No matter what anyone
says, you can take a picture of the tombstone and go back in exactly
one year and there will be another link on the chain.
The
family will not discuss the man’s death, so the legend just
goes on and on from one generation to other. Maybe if you are daring
enough you can visit on the anniversary of his death and see how this
mysterious link appears.
