The story of Oak Alley Plantation.
If you love old
plantation homes along with spooky occurrences then you must visit
This old 1800’s plantation better known
as the “Grand Dame of the great River Road” is a majestic sight to
see. The major attraction of this home is the "full peripheral
colonade of 28 colossal Doric columns."
If you are a movie buff, then you have
more than likely seen the old plantation in films such as Dixie:
Changing Habits, Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, Interview with a
Vampire, The Long Hot Summer, Primary Colors, and North and South.
The plantation was the home of Jacques
and Josephine Pile Roman. Jacques loved his home; however, Josephine
missed the thrill of high society she saw in New Orleans once she
moved to Oak Alley Plantation. She was often away in New Orleans
with her children, leaving her husband alone. He died of
tuberculosis in 1848, alone in the plantation.
Their daughter, Louise was of course,
raised along side the high society in New Orleans. One evening, a
suitor that was a bit drunk tried to approach her. She was so
disgusted that she ran and tripped over the iron frame of her hoop
skirt. Her leg was cut severely and she developed gangrene. Her leg
had to be removed. After this time, she did not feel worthy enough
for marriage, so joined a convent in St. Louis, Missouri. She did
return home later.
Finally, after several owners, Andrew
and Josephine Stewart purchased the plantation and restored it back
to its original state in 1925.
This plantation has spirits that do not seem very happy with such
occurrences as a candlestick being thrown across the room by unseen
hands and crying can be heard throughout the home. Spirits that have
been seen, felt, or heard including the ghost of a slender, young
woman with long dark hair has been seen walking up the walkway, in
many different rooms, and riding a horse across the estate grounds.
This spirit is believed to be that of either Josephine or her
Jacques Telesphore Roman III ghost is
also believed to be hanging around. He has been seen wearing gray
clothing and riding boots outside close by the old kitchen. His face
has been seen in a mirror that sits in the attic.
