The story of the Martha Washington Inn.

The Martha Washington Inn was built just before the Civil War in 1832 by Congressman General Francis Preston but was given to the Methodist Church two years after it was built, as General Preston had passed away. It was the Methodist Church that turned the building into the Martha Washington College, which taught young ladies in social and academic studies. When the Civil War broke out in 1860 the college transformed some of its rooms to house injured soldiers from the war. One particular by the name of John Stoves was one soldier who came to find rest in the Martha Washington College and a student at the college by the name of Beth fell in love with him. While he tried to recover from his injuries, she would stay by his side and play the violin and it’s said that she was playing the stringed instrument as he passed from this life into the next. Beth didn’t make it much longer herself as she died from typhoid fever a few weeks later. Her ghost, as well as the soft sounds from her violin, still often visits Room 403 in the Inn, which is where she lay with Stoves as they both spent their last few moments of life.

In 1864 a Union soldier was shot just outside the door and the soldier’s horse can still sometimes be seen on the front grounds of the inn waiting for his owner to come and take him home. There was also a Confederate soldier who had raced into the house in order to warn others that the Union soldiers were soon coming however, once reaching the upstairs of the home, he was shot and his bloodstains can still be seen outside of the Governor’s room. A bellhop who’s worked at the inn for 30 years claims that any rug that is laid over the area where the soldier died will develop spots in the place where the soldier lay dying.

The inn has also been known to have cold spots, apparitions, and doorknobs that turn on their own.
