The story of Berry Pomeroy Castle.
Berry Pomeroy Castle is in Britain
off the A385 around 2 ½ miles from Totnes. This castle in its time was one of
the most romantic around, however, time has stolen the beauty and all that
remains is the ruins of a 13th century masterpiece.
Many castles throughout Europe
have been the sightings of ghosts, apparitions, and strange occurrences however;
Berry Pomeroy Castle is believed to be the most haunted in all of Britain.
Two female ghosts frequent this castle known only
as the “White Lady” and the “Blue Lady”. The White Lady dwells in the eerie
dungeons and the rises from St. Margaret’s Tower, however she does venture off
to other areas of the castle. As the legend goes, she is the spirit of Margaret
Pomeroy. Her sister Eleanor was so jealous of the beautiful Margaret and the
love they both had for the same man, she placed her sister, Margaret in the
dungeons. Margaret slowly and painfully died of starvation.
The Blue Lady has been encountered all over the
castle and she enjoys luring unexpected guests into all parts of ruins. It is
believed that she is the ghost of the daughter of one of the Norman Lords of the
castle. The young girl was raped by her father, she became pregnant, and he
strangled the newborn to death.
Another legend around Berry Pomeroy Castle is that
two Pomeroy brothers instead of battling a long besiege they knew they could
win, dressed in full armor, mounted their horses and rode off the top of castle
to their deaths. Many have heard the sounds of hoofs, screaming and then a
sudden dull thud.
