What was the largest drop in the Dow Jones industrial average?
Since the creation of the Dow Jones industrial average
back in 1896 the largest ever one day drop occurred on September 29, 2008 when
after federal lawmakers failed to pass a $700 billion plan to bail out the
financial system, the DOW plummeted from 11,143.13 to 10,365.45, a drop of 777.68
points or 6.98%.
Percentage wise, the
largest one day drop occurred on Black Monday, October 19, 1987 when the DOW
dropped 508 points resulting in a 22.6% drop.
On Saturday, December 12, 1914, after a four month
closure due to the outbreak of WWI, in after market trading the DOW shed 24.39%.
The Great Crash of 1929 spanned several days with
the worst being Black Monday and Black Tuesday, Monday, October 28, 1929 and
Tuesday, October 29, 1929 when the DOW shed 13% and 12% respectively.
