What was the largest solar flare ever recorded?

Solar flare are eruptions on the Sun and are measured, much like earthquakes, on Solar Richter scale.

The largest solar flare ever recorded occurred on November 04, 2003 and registered as an X28 on the Solar Richter scale, which is about equivalent to an earthquake registering 15 on the Richter scale.

The solar flare came from Sunspot 486, which is about 15 times the size of our Earth.

The flare sent billions of tons of super hot gas into space at over 8 million kilometers per hour, luckily for us most of it was directed away from Earth but it did result in displays of the Northern Lights several days later.
