Who was the last player to play without a helmet in the
NHL?
In the summer of '79 the NHL imposed a new rule, all
new players drafted must wear a helmet with the only exception being those that
came over from the WHA.Of course,
existing NHL players were a lot rougher and tougher, after all, they had to walk
five miles to the rink in three feet of snow everyday, so they were allowed to
play out their careers without a helmet.
The last of these rough and tough helmetless NHLers
was Craig MacTavish who finished up his career at the end of the 1996 - 97
season with the St. Louis Blues, becoming the last NHL player to play without a
helmet.
