We are going to have to be creative
here as we could not find any duration records for group hugs.
On April 23 2004 5,117 students and staff from St.
Matthew Catholic High School in Orleans, Ontario, Canada got into a group
Based on this
info and the following assumption we are able to calculate the length of the
Assumption 1: The
average person, when looked down on takes up 2 square feet.
Assumption 2: The group of huggers formed a circle.
Assumption 3: One in ten people smell and anyone near
the smelly person would leave 6" clearance causing the stinker to take up an
extra 4 square feet. Based on that the average person took up 2.4 square feet.
Now for our calculations:
5,117 people x 2.4 square feet =
12280.8 square feet were taken up by the huggers.
pr2 thus 12,280.8 = 3.14(r2)
= 3,911.08 feet.
r = 62.54 feet.
d = 125.08 feet.
So our calculations show that the
longest group hug measured about 125 feet across.
