It started out as a joke but quickly escalated into the great
Tanganyika laughter epidemic and the world's longest
laughter lasted for 6 months of tear jerking, rib tickling problems for
Tanganyika and surrounding villages.
In 1962 a bunch of 12
to 18 year old schoolgirls in Tanganyika started laughing and couldn't
stop. The laughter soon spread to the adults, then to nearby villages affecting
thousands on giddy Tanganyikans.
It wasn't long before the
laughing was no laughing matter as symptoms of pain, fainting, respiratory
problems, rashes, and crying fits were experienced.
Eventually the school had to be shut down so people could be isolated and get
over the Tanganyika Laughter Epidemic.
It must have been
one funny joke.
