In 1994 Jerdone McGhee skipped a stone

On September 14 2002 at the Pennsylvania Qualifying Stone Skipping Tournament
Kurt Steiner tossed a rock and it skipped and skipped and sank, but not before
clinching first place in the tournament.
He was credited with 34 skips until...
With extensive review of the video he was finally credited with a stone cold
40 skips and a new stone skipping world record.
Think you can beat it? Here are some rules:
The stone must be natural and cannot be smoothed down in any way.
No part of the person's body should touch the water during the throw and
until the stone stops skipping.
The attempt must be documented on film or videotape in such a manner that the
entire skip may be viewed from start to finish in one continuous camera shot,
and with a quality allowing for slow motion verification and count of each skip.
Now hop to it!
