struc·ture (strkchr)
n.
1. Something made up
of a number of parts that are held or put together in a particular way:
hierarchical social structure.
2. Something
constructed, such as a building.
Now that that's out of the way we'll give you some choices as to the world's
longest standing structure:
Contender #1:
The Warsaw Radio Mast that was in Poland and stood 646.38 meters or 2,120 feet
tall but collapsed in 1991.
Problem:
It collapsed.
Contender #2: The KVLY-TV mast in Blanchard, North Dakota
which stands 629 meters or 2,063 feet.
Problem:
The tower is not self-supported and as a result
generally does not qualify, bear in mind that a rope dropped from a balloon is
technically a structure, also not self-supported, which could otherwise claim
the title of the world's longest structure.
Contender #3: The Petronius Platform in the Gulf of Mexico
which covers 610 meters or 2,001 feet from the ocean floor to the top.
Problem: Although the
Petronius Platform is a freestanding structure, it is supported by the water and
many believe that the part of it underwater should not count just as the
underground portions of a building to not count in it's height.
Contender #4: The CN Tower in Toronto, Canada stands
553.33 meters of 1,815 feet high.
Problem:
There is no problem, the CN tower, at the very
least, is the world's longest freestanding above ground structure.
