In the early days of the Tour de France
the riders were made to suffer and stage 5 of the 1919 Tour de France took it to
the extreme.
Stage 5 ran from Les Sables-d'Olonne to Bayonne,
covering a leg-cramping 482 kilometers to set the record for the longest Tour de
France stage ever and Frenchman, Jean Alvoine had the honour of winning the
stage.
