Who won the most Gurning World Championships in the world?
The Egremont Crab Fair is an
annual event held on the third Saturday of every September. Here you will not
find the traditional fair rides such as Ferris Wheels and roller coasters
however. This fair includes events that are true to the fair’s history, which
began in 1267 when the Lord of Egremont would annually pass out crab apples for
absolutely free.
Staying true to tradition, this
fair now holds events such as Cumberland wrestling, a pipe smoking event, and
the locals gathering around to sing traditional hunting songs. But the entire
fair starts off with the Parade of the Apple Cart, where an apple cart is driven
down the main street and free crab apples are thrown to the crowd, just as Lord
of Egremont once did centuries ago.
After everyone has had their share
of the apples, the World Gurning Championship begins. This is a very unique
event in which contestants must frame their ugly, distorted faces in a horse
collar, otherwise known as a ‘braffin.’
Gordon Mattison, of Aspatria, Cumbria, holds the
records for the most wins at a Gurning World Championship. He has won the
championship a total of ten times from 1967 to 1972 and then from 1974 to 1977.
