Apollo - Roman
Mythology
Apollo was one of the most
important gods of the Roman religion. His parents were Jupiter and
Latona. He had a twin sister by the name of Diana who was commonly
known as Artemis the virgin huntress.
Apollo
was the god of prophecy, archery, and music. Apollo had a very large
fight with the earth serpent Python. Python was the child of Gaia,
mother earth. She created a crack in the rock where the Priestess, the
Pythia could answer every question that was asked of her. Apollo slew
Python and took its place as the oracle.
Since
Apollo killed Python he had to do penance for his crime. Apollo was
sent to be a slave of a mortal man on two occasions for repentance of
his crimes by Zeus.
Apollo
was very interested in healing, which many believe he was associated
with the plague and the controlling of plague throughout the Roman
Empire.
One of
Apollo’s important duties every day was to harness his
chariot and drive the sun across the sky with four horses. Among his
unique traits, Apollo was also known as the god of light, thus driving
the sun across the sky. He was also known as the god of truth and could
not ever speak a lie.
