Minos - Greek Mythology

Minos was the son of Zeus and the Phoenician Princess Europa who was the king of Crete. Minos had two brothers Rhadamanthys and Sarpedon who all lived in the royal palace of Cnossus.

Minos married the daughter of the sun god Helios, Pasiphae. A few of their children include Ariadne, Andregeos, and Phaedra.

The rule of Crete began to be disputed and Minos asked for help from the god of the sea Poseidon to send him an offering as a sign of his true kingship over Crete. From the waves of the sea emerged a pure white bull to show that Minos was the true kind of Crete. The agreement that Minos had with Poseidon was that he would offer the sign, the bull, as a sacrifice, however, King Minos upon seeing this beautiful beast could not bear to offer it as a sacrifice, and he instead exchanged it for another bull.

This angered Poseidon that made King Minos wife, Pasiphae to fall in love with the white bull that she had sent. Pasiphae has so much lust for the bull that she asked Daedalus, a craftsman to help her to mate with the bull. Daedalus built a hollow cow, so Pasiphae could hide inside and mate with the pure while bull. Pasiphae conceived a creature with the bull which was half man and half bull which became known as the Minotaur.

Upon King Minos learning of this lust and the birth of the Minotaur, he ordered Daedalus to build a palace in which to hide the Minotaur. Daedalus built Labyrinth as a secret home for the Minotaur. Minos then out of anger for Daedalus helping Pasiphae to fulfill her fantasy with the pure white bull imprisoned Daedalus and his son Icarus inside a dark tower. The pair created wings in which to fly from their prison. Icarus however, died when he flew to close to the sun.
