How the Sun
received its name - Mexican Myth
At the start of the Surem
era, no one knew the name of the sun and of course, they wished to call
it something. They held a council on the bank of the Surem River to try
to decide what the sun should be named. Everyone present gave their
opinion; however, no one could come up with a name for the sun. The
main problem was no one knew whether the sun was a male or female,
therefore they did not know whether to use a masculine or feminine
name. None of the Surem people could agree. They decided to invite all
the animals of the world to come to the council meeting to help them
come up with a name.
After all
the animals were present on the bank of the river just before dawn,
they all began to give their ideas. As the sun appeared over the
horizon, a badger came out of a hole, which was the entrance to his
home.
The
badger walked up to the council and stated in a very masculine voice,
"The sun being a man, comes out of a hole in the earth as I do." After
saying this, he ran away very quickly.
All
the people and animals began to run after him. They wanted to thank him
for being so smart. They wanted to plan a party for him and pay him
with a wonderful feast.
The
badger would not come out of his home, he was afraid they wanted to
punish him for some reason. From that time forward, the badger is not
seen often in the open plains. He is still afraid that someone has the
desire to punish him for something.
