The First Tears
– Inuit Legend
Before Alaska was filled with
people, the Inuit told stories of how the first tears were shed.
Many many
years, man went hunting for seals along the shoreline. When he first
arrived, he saw many seals just lying around in crowds together. Man
became overjoyed with the thoughts of his wife and son when they saw
the food that he brought home to keep them feed for many days. However,
the seals began to slip into the water faster than the man could cut
one with his knife. All of his food was getting away!
Man then
saw a single seal all alone a long way from the water’s edge.
The seal was moving a lot slower than the rest so he set his heart on
this very large seal. He knew this one seal alone would keep his family
feed for many days.
Man
slowly inched toward the seal, which was the last one left on the
shore. Just as he was approaching, the seal jumped up and slipped away
into the water. Man slowly rose to his feet with an emotion he had
never felt before. Water began to trickle from his eyes. He then
touched the water coming from his eyes and tasted it. It tasted just
like salt water. Before man knew it, he was making strange noises as if
choking while the water poured from his eyes.
Son
heard the strange sound and called to Woman. They ran to the waters
edge to find out what was wrong with Man. When they arrived, they found
Man with water pouring from both of his eyes. They were at first very
afraid.
Man
then told the story of all the seals that were lying around and how
each one had escaped his knife. Water then began to flow from both the
Woman and Son’s eyes just like that of Man. This is the how
people learned to cry.
