Gilgamesh - Mesopotamian Mythology

Gilgamesh was one of the great heroes of the Mesopotamian Mythology. He was known by through the writings found in the Enuma elish and in the poem Epic of Gilgamesh. The stories about his heroic adventures were passed down from generation to generation by the Sumerians and the Babylonians.

The very long poem has been deemed to have been written before 2000 BCE. In the poem, you will find that Gilgamesh was the son of the goddess Ninsun. It also tells of the strong friendship that Gilgamesh had with Enkidu. The poem tells of their journey to search for immortality. In the poem, Enkidu dies and Gilgamesh finds that there is no truth in immortality. He travels to Utnapishtim and tells him of his own immortality, which was a gift that Utnapishtim received during the great flood. Utnapishtim tells Gilgamesh about a plant that possesses immortality called the plant of life. However, a snake swallows the plant and here is when Gilgamesh learns that death is inevitable.

The clay tablets this poem was discovered on were translated into written works, however, before this time they were only told through stories.

Gilgamesh was as far as anyone can tell based on a king that ruled Uruk around 2600 BCE. There were many tales of this king long before the Epic of Gilgamesh was ever recorded on the clay tablets. The king through Sumerian history was born to Ninsun the goddess just as the poem states Ninsun was the mother of Gilgamesh.
